I grew up in a megacity but was fortunate to live in Tlalpan, a neighborhood on the southern end, and one of the most forested, of Mexico City. My environmental imagination was shaped by ahuehuetes (Taxodium mucronatum), coniferous trees, pirules (Schinus molle), and the celebrity jacaranda tree, which covers the city in violet bloom every March and April.

Working with people who love trees and Tacoma passionately has awakened me to the ways trees give life, heal wounds, and make us friends.

Unleaving Tacoma is a collection of haiku comics, each focused on a deciduous tree, with star appearances by evergreens and wildlife. It is a modest tribute to this city, to its people, its trees, and its neighborhood streets.

I am forever grateful to my teacher and local artist, David Lasky, whose classes introduced me to haiku comics and continue to support my development as a maker of comics. You should take a class with David!
